the odd one

this guy is the only one without a laptop

I was just thinking… Do you see the guy on the photo? Of all the people on his class, he is the only one who doesn’t have a laptop. Well, I don’t know what is his reasons but I don’t want to be stuck in the same situation he is. But come to think of it, I wonder when this type of approach on education will be widespread across the globe? oh ok, not the globe, just here on the Philippines? Imagine wherein laptops are nothing but a common school accessory. When you wanted to share to a friend a class discussion, you’ll just notion “ok, turn on you wi-fi so i can send the notes to you”. Nice! seamless sharing of information.

I don’t know if you notice it or not because I certainly do. Everything we do is all influence by the terms technology, computer, information, internet and the list goes on. The only question is are you riding the flow of these changes or are you still using same “old-school” technology like the guy on the photo?

Do you know that you cannot find a good job nowadays without knowing how to use a computer? Companies today hire those people who are strongly influence by technology. The words excel, word and powerpoint may seem very familiar if you have applied for a desk job lately. Knowing stuffs like this will definitely mean whether you land the job or not.

Nursery students are taught about computers at such an early age. Heck, my youngest sister was using my computer at the age of 3. Education about this things are becoming mandatory. The logic is, if you don’t join them, you’ll definitely get beaten.

I myself was exposed to computers at an early age, maybe at the age of 7 or 8. My first computer was an orange-screen 386 old school “prince of persia” type. Then followed by the paperwhite monitor ones before my father bought me a “486-dx100″ with my very first colored monitor (guess some of you don’t know such stuff).

Technology is changing very fast. Nowadays “portability” is the name of the game. Not only portability but “capacity” as well. So stuffs today are either small, has large storage or both. Some of these are Ipods, Playstation portable, laptops, palmtops, cellphones and many more.

Computers used to very expensive, but due to mass production capabilities of our so-called manufacturers, prices had been cut/lowered tremendously. And this made computers available to the masses.

Computers became even more popular because of the invention/creation of the INTERNET. Information sharing was never this abundant. Now popular mouth words are youtube, google, yahoo, friendster, multiply, myspace and etc.

Gee, I cannot imagine life without a computer. Hell, I cannot live without a computer by my side. Everything that I like is with computers. Games, blogging, my job, what I read, socializing, what I watch —> aargh, there is so much to mention.

But everything has a downside, well, that I strongly believe.

Some or maybe most of us had been very fond/dependent on computers on our recent lives. Meaning, what we all have is saved or stored digitally. Begone thousands of piles of paper, bye bye bulky storage –> welcome small but large capacity hard drives. Well, the thing is, your whole digital life maybe in a very big jeopardy. Perpetual/indestructible storage has never been invented yet. As of today, engineers are still struggling to find ways for us to have our DATA safe and sound without worrying that a simple electronic glitch will cost you all that you have save for years.

One more thing, there is such a thing as hacking more often defined as information hi-jacking or stealing. Information today is shared electronically such as those in banks, hospital, taxes, your nationality and everything you own and defines who you are. Which in any case could be intentionally manipulated to unearthly deeds.

But of all of this things, one thing is for sure… There will be more great things to expect and though you thought that everything has been invented already, well i suggest you think again because there will come a time you’d be so surprised at what science and technology is constantly doing to shape our future.

nice article. i also remember my first computer which is the Atari 800xl with a bulky floppy 1.2 disk drive that serves as the main ‘hard disc’ in those days, hmmm circa 1984. my first pc was a 386 16 mhz and less than a meg of memory, it was still in the DOS o.s…i remember those dreadful config.sys and autoexec.bat that i used to ‘configure’ all the time whenever a new game came along, ah the games…i remember wolfenstein 3d. my 386 came to a slow motion medium when the game Doom arrived. i upgraded my pc to a spanking 486 dx something, mmx or whatever and the wonderment of seeing Doom in blazing fast glory. ah those were the good ol’ days.

@DCRJ - you are definitely right - they were the days when less than a meg of memory costs a lot.

I believe that wolfenstein is the father of first person shooters of today’s era
