ABS-CBN ’s Hana-Kimi Versus GMA ’s Hana-Kimi (A Pinoy TV Series Review)

Before I start my post, I just wanted to make it clear that I am not biased with regards to the two networks abs-cbn and gma. I just wanted to share my opinion with regards to the different versions of the Hana-Kimi series they are showing or airing.

I was really confused at first because I was never really a fan of watching tv for such series. But due to the schedule of my work, and the people at our house, I somehow became quite familiar with the Hana-Kimi shows aired on both station.

According to my research, the reason why there are two Hana-Kimi’s is because one came from Taiwan (abs-cbn’s) and the other came from Japan (gma’s).

GMA ’s Hana-Kimi

japanese version

ABS-CBN ’s Hana-Kimi

taiwan version

I also noticed that abs-cbn placed a “the original” tag on their version while gma placed a “latest and the best” or something like that which means that the Taiwan version came first… right?

ABS CBN aired the Taiwanese version of Hana Kimi which was first broadcasted in 2006, while GMA will air the Japanese version Hanazakari no Kimitachi e which was first broadcasted in 2007; both dramas were adapted from the Japanese manga. Taiwan has produced this drama in 2006, starring Ella Chen and Wu Chun etc. and achieved great ratings; and because of its popularity and success, Fujitv was prompted to make the Japanese version as well…

So which is better? Well, in my personal and humble opinion I think the abs-cbn’s version is much better. There, I said it, go ahead GMA fans, kapusos and clobber me. But again I am not biased into saying this. I like computers than television…so what do I really care who wins.

Here is why:

ABS-CBN ’s Hana-Kimi

First thing is the characters or the actors/actress who played the roll. The Taiwan version made a pretty good choice.

The girl is very funny and realistic. The way she acts seems very normal unlike the girl in the japan version wherein it seems she overreacts it.

The two guys in the Taiwan version participates a lot, they really contribute to how the story develops. The love triangle they caused is pretty exciting to watch.

Of course, there are the other cast like the school doctor, the friends and bullies.

Frankly, i like the Taiwanese version better as it is funnier and “kakakilig”, as well as the story line is much closer to the manga series compared to the japanese version which totally was way different than the manga…..

Well, I’m just glad that ABS has the taiwanese version, i know they’ll do a very good job when it comes to dubbing this drama (well, as always, i just noticed). GMA on the other hand is just awful when it comes to dubbing, i mean aside from the fact that it lacks timing, the voices always doesnt fit the characters!

My friends said that they hated GMA when they re- broadcasted Meteor Garden. I somehow agree to them that their dubbers can’t even pronounce Dao Ming Si’s name properly! and Shan Cai’s and Qinghe’s dubbed were not quite what they are to expect. They made Shan Cai sound like a big girl, hehe. Compared to ABS’s dubbing that it totally reflects and very similar to the voices of the original actors….

All in all, the way the Taiwan version’s execution was pretty lively and lets you anticipated the next episode. Well, unlike on the Japanese version, I didn’t want to watch it after a couple of shows — found it very lousy (sorry for the word) =(

Anyway, its just my opinion… you can say whatever you want but I stand by it…

Ciao!

the fact that you just mentioned the networks’ names really shows bias methinks.

it’s true that the taiwanese version was faithful to the manga, but it became too prolonged and boring. the only things i liked in this drama were the doctor, and wu chun (WU CHUN, and not his acting).

there may not have been much of a love triangle in hana kimi jp, but it captured the feel and spirit of the manga well. besides, there’s a special being filmed in which sano and mizuki’s relationship is addressed. that works for me :)

The hell…so your basing your opinion on other people’s comments especially the fact that you haven’t seen the Japanese version itself? Then you’re an idiot.

I only watch the GmA’s version a couple of times. 4 times to be exact. Enough for me to make a judgement.

And, for the note, I too think, no make it witness as well as observed that GMA needs a little more fine tuning on their dubbing practices. After which, I might reconsider watching the Japanese version on their station.

In line with the last parapgraph, Here is what I would like to see, let them trade versions of Hana Kimi… GMA dubs taiwan and ABS dubs Japanese… then we will see…

hana kimi of abs-cbn is the best rather than hana kimi of gma because you’ll see on how they show the true story about love and shows some joke but on gma, its what we called KORNI..

not a kapams or kapus fanatic here but i say i love the japanese version the best. it’s more funnier not to mention that Maki-chan is so cool and way better looking than ella chen. no offense though :D

pero in the philippines kasi we are more into looks and mushy and stuff, too bad napaka-underrated dito ng mga japanese dramas. They are more and much better than those taiwanese dramas.

Not to be ride or anything, but you are absolutely wrong. ABS once again proved to be inclined with the ‘copy-cats’ because the Taiwanese version (although came out first) simply took the JAPANESE ORIGINAL story and made it their own. This alludes to ABS always trying to remake stuff and make it their own.

I don’t know why the heck ABS would put “THE ORIGINAL HANA KIMI” as their tagline because seriously, Taiwan didnt create Hana Kimi, it is FROM JAPAN.

That aside, the Japanese Hana Kimi is more canon than the Taiwanese and the cast was perfect because they FIT the ages of the characters. Whereas the Taiwanese version’s actors are 25 and above when they are playing 16 to 17 year old characters.. I find that very UNREALISTIC.

Second, what really bugged me is the Taiwanese’s perception of JULIA, Mizuki’s American best friend. Although I love NISSA (the actress.. well, MODEL who played her), she CANT ACT! like.. can’t they even find a decent Taiwanese actress that CAN SPEAK AMERICAN ENGLISH?! I mean, they should’ve made Julia a blonde, but once again, they ruined it.

All in all, the Taiwanese is NOT better than the Japanese version. Both scored equal for me since I thought the Japanese SANO looked fugly. Japanese’s Nakatsu is just as good as the Taiwanese’s. Ella and the Japanese Mizuki is both good, but I like the Japanese Mizuki ’cause you can still see the hint of femininity on her, whereas Ella is simply a tomboy. Misuki is girllish trying to be a tomboy in a manga and the Taiwanese version should have honored that.

    That’s all.

first of all why does one have to be compared to the other.?

having seen both, each has their ups and downs…

but truthfully, you cannot.. and i mean cannot really appreciate these dramas, unless you see them in their true form… (now although true that when i saw it, i dont understand neither language, but hearing it.. made me understand and appreciate it more.)

especially with japanese dramas… you wont really get the comedy effect unless you hear how the person really says it… (it just sounds really awkward when dubbed into another language)

    thats my IMO

PS.. HKjapan is was and always will be better than the HKtaiwan…

alam nyo, sabay ko pinapanood ang hana kimi japan and taiwan, but the best is the taiwan. you know what, ABS is the best dubbers. kaya nilang i-reflect ang boses sa kanilang personality and role.

compare nyo nga ang mga asianovela ng dalwang networks, diba ang ABS ang excellent in dubbing. as in, wxcellent. they know how to chose.

Well, this would explain the problem.

At first, HANA KIMI “the original” ang tagline ng ABS-CBN because ORIGINALLY Taiwan made the LIVE SERIES first. So, by basing the LIVE SERIES, TAIWAN WAS RIGHT TO BE CALLED IT. THE ORIGINAL. When Taiwan had made its live series, it was then followed by the JapaneseVersion.,

..although Japan first made this HanaKimi MANGA.

NO ONE SHOULD NAME JAPANESE VERSION (by LIVE SERIES) as THE ORIGINAL,but Taiwan deserved. TAKE NOTE: By LIVE SERIES only. But by MANGA, of course JAPAN is the Original.

But then YOU CAN’T COMPARE THE MANGA (of japan) AND THE LIVE SERIES (of Taiwan) as of which is REALLY THE ORIGINAL. Only a jackass could do such thing. MANGA IS MANGA and LIVE SERIES IS LIVE SERIES. I know Taiwan made the manga as the basis of making the live series of it and TAIWAN MADE IT FIRST IN LIVE SERIES.

HANA KIMI THE ORIGINAL is fit to ABS’s HanaKimi.

And when it comes to the question “Which is better?”, well only I can say is TAIWAN’s is the better. They faithfully followed the manga but Japan made lots of unnecessary scenes and it was about not to follow THEIR OWN MANGA. They overdecorated the series.

And because of “maybe” insecurity and security, Japan didn’t allow Taiwan to make the sequel of Taiwan’s HK; of “maybe” they (japan) were afraid Taiwan’s HK would be better and would gather more awards.

The portrayals of HKT were better indeed than in HKJ. HKJ was moreover drama. Taiwan made it jolly and fun.
